Fire Prevention
Fire Safety refers to a proactive method of reducing emergencies and the precautions that are taken to prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire that may result in death, injury, or property damage. The Rochester Fire Department believes that public education is the first line of defense in fire and injury prevention. We strive to eliminate fire by the education of the general public to hazards around them and how to deal with them. In furtherance of Fire Safety and Education, the RFD offers public service programs to all residents and merchants within the Township and both Boroughs.

Residential Smoke Alarm Installation
Every year in the United States, there are more than 350,000 house fires, resulting in over 2,500 deaths. Of these deaths, 60% of them occur during fires in which no working smoke alarm is present. Smoke alarms are crucial elements in the early detection of fires. About half of home fire deaths ooccur between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., while residents are asleep. We here at the Rochester Fire Department wish to get these numbers to zero and by doing that, we provide and install smoke alarms to residents free of charge, during our fire prevention week activities. These smoke alarms have a built in battery that will last up to ten years. After that time, simply purchase a new detector and dispose of the old one.
The Rochester Fire Department will install at least one alarm per dwelling. If interested in receiving your free smoke alarm, fill out the form below.
Staff Training
The Rochester Fire Department currently offers both "hands on" training and "classroom" training on multiple topics. The training often includes the safe use of fire extinguishers, rescue and evacuation procedures, and a review of facility fire alarm and fire suppression systems. Certificates will be presented to participants in accordance to OSHA 1910.157 Portable Fire Extinguishers.
